FROM THE ARCHIVES

View of Brokenback Range, Hunter Valley, from Loggerheads. Vintage Ports - Australian
It is exceedingly unlikely that a tasting of the magnitude of that organised by James Godfrey, Seppelt's chief fortified winemaker, will ever be staged again. The 100 or so tasting notes which follow were but half of the tasting, the other 100 being Portuguese vintage ports spanning the same 70 years.

Vintage foresight
The year was 1966 and Jim Barry was general manager of the Clarevale Co-operative. He also happened to be the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley.

Barossa Valley - origins
Few Australian wine regions speak as clearly of their origins and past as does the Barossa Valley. Rutherglen, Glenrowan and the Clare Valley spring to mind as the most obvious challengers, but fail to match the Barossa Valley on one score or another.

The Hunter Valley - A personal odyssey
James Halliday has always been strongly influenced by the draw Hunter Valley. The wines were the first he tasted, it was the first region he visited, and it was where he started his first vineyard.

Welcome to Wine Country sign Browns of Padthaway

Location: Australia - South Australia - Padthaway
The Brown family has for many years been the largest independent grape grower in Padthaway, a district in which most of the vineyards were established and owned by Wynns, Seppelts, Lindemans and Hardys, respectively. A rapidly expanding range of wines is now appearing under the Browns of Padthaway label, the majority being pleasant but very light in body and flavour.Poole's Rock

Location: Australia - NSW - Lower Hunter Valley
Sydney merchant banker David Clarke has had a long involvement with the wine industry, including a directorship of McGuigan Brothers Limited. The 18-hectare Poole's Rock vineyard, planted purely to chardonnay, is his personal venture, the resource recently bolstered by the acquisition of the larger, adjoining Simon Whitlam Vineyard. The wine has retail distribution throughout Australia and is exported to the UK and US.

Picking grapes A crush of women winemakers
Time was when winemaking was a male preserve... Not any more, writes Tony Aspler.

Tradition of vintage drops
The Mazzei family's coat of arms originated in the 11th century, bearing three wooden hammers, the symbol of barrel makers. In the 14th century, the hammers were replaced by the iron maces which still appear on the coat of arms today.
