Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Issue No 191 - December 2000

This month Clive Coates looks at the Domaine Jean-Noel Gagnard, Domaine Dugat-Py and Domaine De Trevallon wineries, 1955 and 1960 Port as well as a review of the 2000 vintage and more.

In this Issue:

Domaine Jean-Noel Gagnard
The Domaine Jean-Noel Gagnard is regarded as one of Chassagne's finest wineries. Clive himself, has been enjoying the wines of Domaine Jean-Noel Gagnard for as long as he can remember. Here he recommends some of those he sampled in June 2000.

Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py
The Dugat family have a long tradition of winemaking going back to the days of Napoleon. Clive looks into the Dugat family history and praises Bernard Dugat as one of today's masters in the industry.

Domaine de Trevallon
On the edge of Les Alpilles, in the corner of the 'appellation' Les Baux, A.C., Eloi Durbbach literally dynamited the solid, craggy limestone rock surrounds from 1974 onwards and planted a vineyard. It is here, Clive says, that one of the great and most individual wines of the Midi is produced - Trevallon.

1955 and 1960 Port
After steadily working his way through all the more recent vintages of Port over the last few years, Clive relishes the opportunity to taste the 1955 and 1960 vintages alongside each other once more.

The 2000 vintage
The size of the 2000 harvest is plentiful and the quality of the vintage is mostly very good. Here Clive reviews the 2000 vintage from Bordeaux to Tokaji.

Christmas Books Review
Jasper Morris MW reviews 'The Oxford Companion to the Wines of North America', 'The New Italy', 'Tuscany and its Wines' and other literary treats available in time for Christmas 2000.
