Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

1. Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Early Release Semillon 2001

Rating: 93

The first Elizabeth to be experimentally sealed with a screwcap, sold through Vintage Cellars, and a great vintage to start with.

2. Leasingham Bin 7 Riesling 2003

Rating: 93

Seems to be a permanent part of the Top 100, but you can't ignore it: old vines and lots of winemaking experience are a potent combination.

3. O'Leary Walker Watervale Riesling 2003

Rating: 94

I marginally prefer this to its Polish Hill River sister wine, a preference which is probably politically incorrect.

4. Chalkers Crossing Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2001

Rating: 96

How this wine is still available beats me, but it has not suffered ý indeed it has improved ý during its time in bottle since last year.

5. Tower Estate Hunter Valley Semillon 2003

Rating: 93

A very low pH and strong natural acidity providing a rust-proof frame for long aging.

6. Penfolds Reserve Bin Aged Release Clare Valley Riesling 1998

Rating: 93

An ancient mariner, but if all the bottles are as good as this, no problem.

7. Turkey Flat Marsanne Semillon 2002

Rating: 93

A blend unique to Turkey Flat and, I suspect, to Australia, and which has developed slowly but surely over the past year, with more in the tank.

8. Vintage Cellars Robe Chardonnay 2000

Rating: 92

No, this is not advertorial.

9. West Cape Howe Unwooded Chardonnay 2003

Rating: 92

Unwooded chardonnay is usually infinitely boring, as ubiquitously present as is KFC (which suits it).

10. Lillydale Estate Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2002

Rating: 93

A fine example of the cool growing season and small crops in the vintage.
