Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

1. Metier Tarraford Vineyard Chardonnay 2000

Rating: 95

Martin Williams crafts all his wines with great care, the emphasis on subtlety and finesse.

2. Peter Lehmann Reserve Riesling 1998

Rating: 96

Happily follows in the footsteps of the all-conquering 1993 Riesling which ended up with a room-full of trophies.

3. Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2000

Rating: 96

Notwithstanding the challenges of Yattarna, Giaconda, Petaluma tiers and so forth, Leeuwin is my choice as Australia's best chardonnay.

4. Wellington Chardonnay 2000

Rating: 94

Tasmanian chardonnays are seldom flashy in their youth, due in no small measure to the high levels of natural acidity the climate provides.

5. Tyrrell's Reserve Stevens Semillon 1998

Rating: 94

Six gold medals to date for a wine just starting to seriously hit its straps is testimonial to the quality of the Stevens vineyard.

6. Keith Tulloch Semillon 2003

Rating: 96

Won the trophy for Best Current Vintage Dry White Wine at this year's Hunter Valley Wine Show.

7. Freycinet Riesling 2003

Rating: 94

From one of Tasmania's foremost pinot noir producers (watch out for the superb 2002) but also with a history of first class rieslings.

8. Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2000

Rating: 96

Made with same grape sourcing philosophy as Grange, taking the best cool climate grapes available each vintage.

9. Ferngrove Vineyards Cossack Riesling 2003

Rating: 94

A more than convincing follow-up to the all-conquering 2002 version, underlining the symbiosis between the Frankland River subregion and riesling.

10. Diamond Valley Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2002

Rating: 94

Built around grapes supplied by Yarra Valley growers with a long relationship with Diamond Valley, the very cool vintage and low yields ideal.
