Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

1. Huntington Estate Shiraz Bin FB24 2002

Rating: 92

One of the doyens of Mudgee, with vineyards up to 30 years old, and noted for the sheer honesty (and value) of its wines.

2. Judds Warby Range Estate Durif 2002

Rating: 91

The recent rash of durif plantings in the Riverland and Riverina areas are a testimonial to the power of the variety, amplified here at Glenrowan (and at Rutherglen).

3. Hackersley Merlot 2002

Rating: 94

One of the newer arrivals in the Geographe region, selling part of the grapes, and having the best bits made for itself.

4. d'Arenberg d'Arry's Original Shiraz Grenache 2001

Rating: 91

This year (2003) marks d'Arry Osborne's 50 years with the winery founded by his father in 1912; both he and the wine are original if not institutional.

5. McWilliam's Hanwood Shiraz 2002

Rating: 89

You will doubtless find this wine selling for much less than $12, notwithstanding its trophy at the 2003 Royal Brisbane Wine Show.

6. Annie's Lane Cabernet Merlot 2002

Rating: 92

It wouldn't be hard for Annie's Lane to garner four or five slots in the Top 100 year in, year out.

7. Balnaves Cabernet Merlot 2000

Rating: 93

Pete Bissell is a highly gifted winemaker, crafting immaculate wines for both Balnaves and Majella.

8. Wolf Blass Gold Label Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2001

Rating: 93

Yet another of the top range Blass wines to use the screwcap; if ever you doubt the suitability of this closure to red wine, try this wine.

9. Lindemans Cawarra Merlot 2002

Rating: 87

Do not think this is a great wine, but two recent tastings make me rate it as great value.

10. Flying Fish Cove Margaret River Shiraz 2002

Rating: 94

Acts as a contract winemaker for others (including Carbunup Crest) as well as producing 'own label' wines of great quality such as this gold medal winner from 2003 Western Australia Wine Show.
